Big master bedroom open on July 1st in 3BR Mission apartment for $1170
The big master bedroom in our apartment is opening up and we'd love to
find a great person to come join the household.
MOVE-IN
The move-in date is July 1. The lease is now month-to-month, although
we're looking for a housemate intending to stay at least a year. If you're interested, contact Noah by email -- nflower (dot) 82 (at) gmail (dot) com -- which he checks about as regularly as his heartbeat.
RENT & UTILITIES
The master bedroom is $1170 per month, with a security deposit of
$1000. Utilities come to about $65 each month, which includes PG&E,
basic cable, 12-megabit Internet (broadcast on our wireless hubs),
water, and garbage collection. If we keep up the twice-monthly
housecleaner that's another $50 per person, and if we keep up the
weekly box of local organic veggies then that's another $30.
ABOUT THE PLACE
The space itself is the nicest we've ever lived in:
* new hardwood floors
* granite countertops
* restaurant-style stove
* a single massive combined kitchen/dining room/living room
* tasteful paint job
* private back patio with a BBQ
* built-in washer/drier
* two spacious bathrooms
* storage in the garage downstairs
The upstairs has the common room, two bedrooms, a bathroom, and the
washer & drier; the downstairs has the master bedroom. The house was
rebuilt from the studs in the early 2000s, so everything's new. Our
landlady is friendly and happy to repair things, and our upstairs
neighbor is a friend of ours who doesn't mind noise except late at
night. We've never even heard from the people who live on either side.
THE ROOM
The master bedroom is a big room -- 12' x 15' -- with a
walk-in closet, glass doors that open on the patio, a high degree of
privacy, and its own bathroom that has a jacuzzi tub with an overhead
shower. The current housemate easily fits his desk along with a queen
bed and bookshelves.
See the photos above - current setup, bathroom from the outside, shower, closet, view onto the patio.
There's a parking spot in the garage downstairs which we currently use
as a "basement" for parking bikes and storing stuff, but if you have a
car and wanted indoor parking you could have it to yourself for an
extra $100.
THE LOCATION
We're on 22nd St. just east of the intersection with Shotwell, in the
southern part of the central Mission, 8 minutes' walk from the 24th
St. BART and close to a lot of the Mission Muni lines. Being in the
Mission, it's flat, very sunny for the city, an 20-minute bike ride
from downtown, and everything you might want is within striking
distance: cheap groceries, cheap burritos, cafes, theater, concerts,
bars, gourmet restaurants, used bookstores, gift shops, used clothing,
and Latino dudes selling strawberries at an amazing price. For
good-quality groceries, Rainbow and the Alemany Farmer's Market are
both an easy bike ride away; for less swanky groceries, Delano's is
two blocks away and open late hours. There's also Thai, Italian, and
Mexican specialty grocers nearby.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking to create a household that feels like a home and a
source of community, so we're hoping to find someone else who feels
the same. While we're fairly open to lifestyle choices and would
appreciate someone who brings different style and values to the house,
you'll probably find yourself meshing well with us if you're mid-20s
to mid-30s, working on something that gives you joy or feeds
intellectual curiosity, and stable in your life.
ABOUT US
We're both into cooking and sharing food, we're both pretty social
creatures but not partying all the time, and we're into watching
movies but almost zero TV. Noah works downtown most of the time but
also a bit at home, and Jason will be doing a lot of work at home and
at cafes, so the house will be a good place to do laptop work if
that's part of your schedule. We're also both pretty big into
politics, tech stuff, international issues, and Burning Man, so you'll
hear a lot of that around the house.
JASON
I'm 27 and originally from Mountain View; after undergrad in NYC I
spent some years in the non-profit world, traveling abroad, and
starting up a disaster relief organization post-Katrina. I moved back
to the Bay Area in 2006 and have been here since. I'm in the final
year of a joint public policy-international studies master's program
at UC Berkeley, though I will be using it more as a platform for
networking and launching projects than being a conventional student
(i.e. I will have a life). This summer I'll be working as a researcher
on a book project for Robert Reich and indulging the joys of SF,
sitting in Dolores Park with a guitar, helping put together a Burning
Man theme camp and art project, and rediscovering city living after
two years in the sleepy East Bay. I miss the Mission; I used to live
at 24th & Folsom and am excited to remake my home in the area.
I generally keep normal hours: asleep by midnight, up by 8am. I don't
smoke, don't do drugs (except at Burning Man), and I drink at dinner
parties--which I look forward to hosting every now and again. I enjoy
cooking immensely. I'm really easy-going and have lived with enough
people to be tactful and direct in communication.
- I don't watch television, but I do watch TED talks and random youtube memes.
- I don't have a car, but I love riding my road bike.
- I don't eat meat, but I do eat seafood and make exceptions for bacon.
- I don't blast music, but I do listen to pretty much everything (former
world music DJ).
- I don't sing, but I do play guitar.
- I don't do programming (anymore), but I like geeking out on technology.
- I don't make art, but I relish creativity in most forms.
I also go out dancing a lot, I play capoeira, I organize a Portuguese
language group, I ski when there's snow, and I travel across the world
whenever I get a good opportunity (just got back from field research
in Ghana a month ago).
NOAH
I've lived at the apartment for two and a half years now, and while
I'm sad to see my two old roommates move on, I'm also excited to see
the household move into a new phase. I'm 27 and grew up in various
parts of southern Marin. I spent high school and college as a tech
nerd, then switched up computer science for moral philosophy. Then
after graduation I found work at a consulting firm doing scenario
planning and other kinds of foresight analysis -- ask me sometime,
it's hard to explain -- and nowadays I work on a team that helps
foundations and nonprofits explore new strategies and methods for
achieving social change. Like you might expect, that means I'm deeply
fascinated by all manner of technology and world issues. I'm
especially interested in sustainability and the food system. I just
came back from a wonderful seven-week backpacking trip around Peru and
Ecuador, and to keep up the outdoor exploration this summer I intend
to do a good bit of rock climbing, mountain biking, camping, and
backpacking. (In the winter I'll head up snowboarding at least a few
times.) I'm also very much looking forward to returning to Black Rock
City for the sixth time.
I generally keep normal-to-early hours: asleep by 10 or 11, up by 6 or
7. I work around 45-50 hours a week and I love what I do. I don't
smoke, I smoke a little weed at parties and to watch movies, and I
drink when I'm out with friends. I work at home about once a week. I
work out a bit at home. I like hosting parties from time to time,
especially dinner parties and bring-your-own-ingredients cooking
extravaganzas. I like playing board games and cards from time to time.
I don't have a car and tend to use my bike to get anywhere in town. I
love watching movies and listening to all kinds of music at home, but
I don't watch any TV other than shows downloaded off the 'net. I love
to cook, I love cooking with people, and I love to share food. I eat
everything but I try to emphasize vegetables, minimize meat, and make
a point of eating ethical. I'm very easy-going and outgoing. I'm very
tidy and like to keep things clean and organized in the common areas.
I'm also big on clear communication, explicit expectations, and
generally keeping the household running smoothly. I like to go out
dancing, check out art shows, go to the movies, go to concerts, hang
at cafes, and read up online to find out what's happening in the
world. I particularly enjoy talking culture, politics, history, and
all manner of ideas.
WHAT TO DO
Since Jason is out of town June 16-28, we'd like to show the place in
the coming couple of weeks and make a decision soon if at all
possible. So git crackin'! We've put some effort into telling you
about the place and ourselves; put in some effort and tell us about
yourself, with "Shotwell Apt" in the subject line. A link to Facebook
or other social media is a win; a youtube clip introducing yourself
would make you eligible for epic win.
Cheers,
Noah and Jason
P.S. -- Here are some photos of the rest of the space from back before we moved in, so you can get a feel for the living room, kitchen, and two upstairs bedrooms.
